PISA typically assesses three foundational domains of competence in every cycle:
Scientific Literacy,
Mathematical Literacy and
Reading Literacy. Rotatively one of which is the main domain in each cycle, i.e., the particular focus of assessment; while the other two domains of competence are minor domains. Since 2012, PISA has assessed students in an innovative domain in every cycle. The innovative domain assessments target interdisciplinary, 21st century competences, providing PISA countries/economies with a more comprehensive outlook on their students' 'readiness for life'. In PISA 2025, Scientific Literacy is the main domain of study, while Reading and Mathematics are the minor domains. The innovative domain is '
Learning in the Digital World'.
