Project Team Member (Research Methodology and Educational Statistics)

Professor Gaowei CHEN

Professor Gaowei Chen is an associate professor in the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. He specialises in research methodology and educational statistics, and gives advice to the Project Team on the data analysis of PISA 2025 in Hong Kong. He received his PhD in educational psychology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prior to joining HKU, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow for three years in the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Professor Chen particularly specialises in identifying the central aspects of complex educational problems and providing critical perspectives for statistical modelling and analysis. As a faculty research-methods consultant, he has advised over 120 research postgraduate students to enhance their research. He is a recipient of the Faculty Early Career Research Output Award (2019), Research Output Prize (2020), and the Faculty Outstanding Young Researcher Award (2021) at HKU. He is as an associate editor of the Journal of the Learning Sciences and an international associate of the Cambridge Educational Dialogue Research (CEDiR) at the University of Cambridge.
